Day 23 – The Inciting Incident: Sparking the Story

Welcome to Day 23! After capturing your reader’s attention with a strong opening, your next challenge is to keep them turning the page.

Every story reaches a moment that changes everything. It’s a disruption, a discovery, or a spark. These moments push your character out of their comfort zone and into the heart of the plot. This is called the inciting incident, and it’s the event that propels your story onward.

It might be a sudden revelation, a surprising opportunity, or an unwelcome twist. Whatever form it takes, this moment should grab your protagonist. It should also seize your reader by the heart and refuse to let go.

Here’s a great article I found on this topic.

Today’s prompts will help you find or create a crucial moment. This is when your character’s world begins to shift. This is also when the real story begins.

Today’s Prompts

  1. The Revelation
Is something new revealed to your character? Are they happy, relieved, sad, or angry? How does the revelation change their journey?
  2. The Disruption
Write the moment when something disturbs your character’s ordinary world. What makes them realize things will never be the same?
  3. The Invitation
What opportunity, mystery, or call to adventure appears? How does your character react: eagerly or with hesitation?
  4. The Refusal
Most heroes hesitate at first. Write your character’s first resistance or denial of the call to action. What fear holds them back?
  5. The Catalyst Character
Who or what sets events in motion? Create a scene where this person or force crosses your protagonist’s path for the first time.
  6. The Crossing Point
Show the moment when your character chooses to step onward. What decision marks the true beginning of their journey?
  7. The Unexpected Consequence
Let your inciting event spiral out of control. How does a small action trigger something much bigger?
  8. The Emotional Shift
Focus on what changes inside your character because of this event. What belief or assumption starts to crack?
  9. The New Goal
After the inciting event, your character wants something new or wants to fix what’s broken. What do they want now?
  10. The Refusal
Sometimes the character isn’t willing to go on the journey. Does your character say no? If so, how do they refuse? Do they ignore it? Do they just say no?

The inciting incident is your story’s spark; the moment where everything begins to move. It doesn’t need to be loud or dramatic; it only needs to matter. Today, listen for that turning point in your character’s life, the one that whispers, “Nothing will ever be the same.” That’s where your story truly begins to breathe.
