Day 24 – The Lock-In: The Point of No Return

Welcome to Day 24! Yesterday, you explored the inciting incident: the spark that jolts your character out of the ordinary and into something new. Today, we move to the next essential story beat: the lock-in.

The lock-in is the moment when your character can no longer turn back. Whether by choice or circumstance, they’re committed to the journey ahead. The safe world they once knew is gone, and now every decision will carry consequences.

This moment transforms curiosity into commitment. It’s where the story begins to unfold.

Here is an excellent article by Shaunta Grimes. In the article, she discusses both the inciting incident and the lock-in.

Today’s prompts will help you find or strengthen that point of no return in your story.

Today’s Prompts

  1. The Line Crossed
Write the moment your character makes (or is forced into) a decision they can’t undo. What’s waiting on the other side?
  2. The Door Closes
Something prevents your character from returning to their old life. Is it a physical barrier, a promise, or a moral line?
  3. The Reluctant Step
Show your character hesitating before they commit. What fears or doubts must they push through?
  4. The Choice Made
Write a scene where your protagonist takes clear action toward their goal for the first time. What makes this decision irreversible?
  5. The Consequence Appears
Let your character realize the weight of their choice. How does the world or another person respond?
  6. The Support or Betrayal
Does someone help them cross this barrier? A mentor? Or does someone try to prevent them from crossing into the new world? A threshold guardian?
  7. The Moment of Resolve
Write the instant your character internally accepts what lies ahead. What emotion marks that change: fear, courage, or determination?
  8. The New World
Show your character’s first steps into the unfamiliar territory. What about this new reality feels disorienting or alive?
  9. The Promise or Threat
Let another character or fate itself deliver a warning about what’s to come. How does it shape your protagonist’s resolve?
  10. The Point of No Return
End with a moment that seals their commitment. From here on, the only way out is through.

The lock-in is where your story catches fire. It’s the promise that your character will face what’s coming, no matter the cost. Today, write that threshold moment with courage and heart. Once your protagonist takes that step, the adventure truly begins.
