Day 25 – Trials, Allies, Enemies and the Approach to the Inmost Cave

Welcome to Day 25! You’ve guided your character through the spark of the inciting incident and past the point of no return. Now the character must face tests. They need to gain allies. They also make enemies. All these experiences lead them to the Approach of the Inmost Cave.

The “inmost cave” doesn’t always mean a literal place. It’s the symbolic heart of your story. It is the moment when your hero draws closer to the truth, danger, or transformation waiting ahead. Conflict intensifies, courage is tested, and what your character learns here will prepare them for what’s coming next.

Here is an article that explains this section of storytelling.

Today’s prompts will help you explore the tension, growth, and emotional depth of this vital stretch of your story.

Today’s Prompts

  1. The Gathering Storm
Write a scene that shows your character approaching something big: a goal, a danger, or a revelation. What emotions surface as they draw closer?
  2. The Test
Create a moment that challenges your protagonist’s strength, skill, or belief. What weakness or fear do they uncover in themselves?
  3. The Ally Appears
Introduce or deepen a supportive relationship. How does this ally help your character face what’s ahead or remind them of what’s at stake?
  4. The Enemy Revealed
Write a scene where your character confronts someone (or something) working against them. What does this opposition teach them about their own limits?
  5. The Internal Struggle
Let your character wrestle with self-doubt or guilt. What inner conflict threatens to derail their progress?
  6. The Moment of Connection
Show a scene where your protagonist bonds with an ally. Do they also see a new truth about someone they misjudged?
  7. The Rising Tension
Something important goes wrong. How does this complication raise the emotional or physical stakes?
  8. The Glimpse of Truth
Let your character sense, just for a moment, what lies at the heart of their journey. Find out what they truly need to face. Decide what they need to change.
  9. The Loss or Sacrifice
Show your protagonist giving something up: an illusion, an ally, or a sense of safety. How does this loss shape them?
  10. The Threshold of the Cave
End with your character standing at the edge of danger or revelation. They’re not the same person they were when the journey began.

This is where courage takes root: in uncertainty, struggle, and growth. The Approach to the Inmost Cave is about preparation, both external and internal. Let your character be tested, shaken, and changed. The real transformation is already beginning.
